San Antonio District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg has called on the City's Code Enforcement Division to investigate problems at the Windbury Apartments on Gardendale. The complex is in Nirenberg's district.
Our investigation in one apartment found a collapsed bathroom ceiling, mold, spiders nests, leaking faucets, soggy carpet, and the family of six has been living without air conditioning for the last six months. Bo Meh says for all of this, her family pays $787 a month for a two-bedroom apartment.
"My six-year-old daughter was on the toilet and the ceiling collapsed on her," said Bo Meh, a refugee tenant from the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar.
The Center for Refugee Services says the problem is widespread at the complex in which many refugees live.
The Center's Jann Fractor calls it scandalous. "It looks like a slum," Fractor said.
We contacted the Windbury Apartment management and they repeatedly told News 4 San Antonio they could not disclose any information. Their repeated responses came from our questions to them about the deplorable living conditions.
However, Councilman Nirenberg plans to inspect the complex later this week and we expect to learn the results of the Code Compliance investigation.
